Our Expertise · Terry & Towelling
Our origin is in terry cloth. We weave it ourselves, then take it into towels, bathrobes, slippers, beachwear, surf ponchos and terry lifestyle pieces, across several qualities of terry, engineered for the segment each brand is building for.

Most towelling suppliers start the conversation at the cut-and-sew table. We start at the loom. Weaving the fabric ourselves means weight, hand-feel, absorbency and finish are decisions we make in-house, not specifications we pass on to a subcontractor, from classic hotel-grade terry to double-sided jacquard for spa and resort collections.
Since the beginning
Terry is where Somani started, forty years ago, and it's still where our vertical integration shows most clearly. Every towel, robe or poncho that leaves our mill began as raw fibre, chosen, spun into yarn and woven into cloth under the same roof, before a single stitch of the finished piece was made.

Origin, not just an address
"Made in Portugal" gets used loosely across this industry. At Somani, every stage of terry & towelling — yarn, weaving, dyeing, cutting, sewing, finishing — happens at our own mill in Santo Tirso, Porto. Nothing is subcontracted abroad and relabelled; there's no claim here that isn't backed by the address on the door.
Product categories
Every category below is built on the same in-house terry, from the same looms — shown here in sample images and video, not as a catalogue to browse.
01
Classic terry towels engineered across weight and finish, from everyday hotel-grade terry through to double-sided jacquard for spa, resort and retail collections. Border, hem, pile height and colour are all developed to brief.
Suited to hospitality amenity programmes as much as retail collections, always finished to the same standard regardless of volume.
Hotel weight · Spa weight · Jacquard & dobby
02
Waffle, velour and terry robes, patterned and finished in-house. What starts as a construction decision — weave, weight, collar and belt detail — becomes a robe built for the market it's going into.
From hotel amenity programmes to loungewear-grade robes for premium retail, always cut from fabric we wove ourselves.
Waffle · Velour · Terry
03
Terry and waffle slippers developed as a natural extension of the robe collections: matched fabric to fabric, so a full amenity or retail set reads as one product family rather than three separately sourced items.
Open & closed toe · Matched to robe fabric
04
Beach towels, cover-ups and accessories built for colour, print and jacquard at scale — bold seasonal collections without losing the hand-feel that comes from weaving the terry ourselves.
Print · Jacquard · Oversized formats
05
A technical changing poncho in heavyweight terry: hood, fastenings and absorbency engineered for function first, dressed in the same quality of terry as the rest of the collection.
Heavyweight terry · Hooded construction
06
Terry taken far beyond the bathroom. Jacquard terry shaped into tailored sets, kimonos and kaftans; velour terry turned into blazers, statement beach towels and totes; quilted towelling reimagined as bombers, hats and travel bags — every pattern and texture engineered at yarn level in our own mill.
Jacquard · Velour · Quilted · Elastane towelling
How it's made
A shorter, closer look at the part of the process that's unique to this division: the weaving and finishing that turn plain yarn into terry cloth, before a single towel or robe is cut.
01 · Weaving
Pile height, density and border are set on our own looms — from plain terry to jacquard patterns woven directly into the cloth.
02 · Dyeing & finishing
Dyeing, washing and finishing are tuned per fabric: the same base weave can finish soft and plush or crisp and hotel-durable.
03 · Quality control
Fabric is inspected for weight, absorbency and colour consistency before it ever reaches the cutting table.
Development approach
There's no fixed catalogue of weights or weaves at Somani. Every terry programme starts as a conversation. Together with the brand, we work through weight, pile, weave and finish until we land on the quality that fits the product, the price point and the market it's going into.
The right terry isn't chosen. It's developed, with you.

The towelling category is crowded with suppliers who cut and sew fabric someone else wove. We weave it. That single fact — craft plus a genuine sustainability story, built in-house — is what separates Somani from a factory that simply executes a spec sheet.

Questions
What brands ask us most often before starting a towelling or bath programme.
How long does development take, from brief to approved sample?
Timelines depend on whether the fabric already exists or needs to be engineered from scratch. A standard terry towel in an existing quality moves faster than a new jacquard construction with custom colourways. We share a realistic timeline for each scenario once we've reviewed the brief.
How do we choose the right weight, weave and finish for our product?
There's no fixed spec sheet to pick from: it's an advisory process. Our team works with the brand's brief (product, price point, market) to develop the GSM, pile, weave and finish that fit, rather than fitting the brand into an existing quality.
Do you offer both plain terry and jacquard or dobby patterns?
Both. Plain and dyed terry cover volume programmes efficiently; jacquard and dobby weaving open up branding, texture and pattern work for collections that need more visual identity, including hotel amenity, resort and retail lines.
Tell us about your terry or towelling project (category, target market and timeline) and we'll come back with the right next step.
