Parents read labels. For a childrenswear or nursery brand, the fibres, dyes and trims that touch a baby’s skin are not a detail — they are the product. Certifications are how that promise is verified, but the acronyms are easy to confuse. Here is what they mean in practice, and how Somani applies them across its childrenswear, from newborn essentials to nursery textiles.

GOTS: organic from fibre to finished product

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies organic fibres and the whole processing chain behind them — spinning, weaving or knitting, dyeing, finishing and making up — with environmental and social criteria at every stage. Somani has held GOTS certification for many years and offers its full range in organic cotton.

OCS: verifying organic content

The Organic Content Standard (OCS) tracks and verifies the amount of organically grown material in a product. It is useful for blended qualities where the organic share must be documented.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: tested for harmful substances

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tests every component of an article — fabric, threads, prints, buttons and trims — for substances harmful to health. Its strictest level, Product Class I, applies to articles for babies and toddlers up to 36 months. At Somani, childrenswear is produced to this tier across the division, not only in a certified sub-range.

Why construction matters as much as certification

Certifications cover materials and processes; comfort and safety also depend on how each piece is built. Seams, trims, closures and finishes are chosen for comfort against the skin and for safety, category by category — newborn, toddler and beyond. Somani’s knitted terry, for example, lasts 2 to 3 times longer than conventional terry and dries up to 40% faster, so bath and nursery textiles keep their softness through repeated washing.

One partner for the whole nursery

Childrenswear brands rarely need just one category. Newborn essentials, toddler apparel, organic basics and nursery textiles — bedding, blankets, bath linen and soft accessories — can all be developed under one certified standard, one timeline and one point of contact.

Genuinely made in Portugal

Every stage of Somani’s childrenswear happens in its own facilities in Santo Tirso, Porto, under the same certified process as every other division. Nothing is subcontracted abroad and relabelled. Explore our Childrenswear 360° expertise or get in touch to start your collection.
